Depression therapy in London
Depression – including low mood
Depression therapy with Maxine E King is psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults. It offers a steady, confidential space to understand low mood, what it may be connected to and how it affects your relationships and your sense of worth.
What depression can feel like
Depression is more than sadness. It can feel like heaviness, numbness or emptiness. Everything can take effort. You may lose interest in things you used to enjoy, feel worthless or hopeless or be very hard on yourself.
Some people carry on working and caring for others while feeling flat and disconnected inside. Low mood can build slowly, or it can follow a loss, a change or a long period of strain.
Words that may feel familiar
Empty. Numb. Hopeless. Worthless. Futile. Despair. Exhausted. Unimportant. Self-loathing.
If you are thinking about harming yourself, please do not wait for an appointment. Contact your GP, call NHS 111 or call Samaritans free on 116 123. In an emergency call 999.
How psychodynamic psychotherapy works with depression
Psychodynamic psychotherapy looks at depression in the context of your life story. Low mood may be linked to loss, to feelings that have been pushed away such as anger or grief, or to harsh inner judgements that have built up over time.
Maxine pays attention to what is said and to what is difficult to say. She also notices how these feelings appear between the two of you in the room. Over time you may notice that you feel different within yourself, with more connection, more clarity and improved relationships with others.

Questions about depression therapy
Is psychotherapy an alternative to antidepressants?
Some people use therapy alone. Others use it alongside medication. Decisions about medication are made with your GP or psychiatrist. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a way of understanding depression. It is not a replacement for medical advice.
Can therapy help if I feel numb rather than sad?
Yes. Numbness is a common part of depression. In therapy it is treated as meaningful rather than as a failure to feel. Maxine helps you explore what the numbness may be protecting you from.
How do I know whether to start therapy?
If low mood has lasted for weeks, or is affecting your sleep, work or relationships, an initial consultation is a good next step. It is a chance to talk through what has brought you to this point. Your GP can also assess your mood.
What if I struggle to leave the house?
Sessions are also available online, which can help when going out feels like too much.
