Anxiety therapy in London

Anxiety – including stress, burnout

Anxiety therapy with Maxine E King is psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults on Harley Street, in North London and online. It explores what your anxiety is about, where it began and what it is asking of you, including the stress and burnout that can come with a demanding life.

What anxiety can feel like

Anxiety is more than worry. It can be a racing mind, a tight chest, broken sleep or a constant sense that something is about to go wrong. It can also be quieter: irritability, perfectionism, a need to keep control or an inability to rest.

Stress and burnout often sit alongside anxiety. You may be exhausted but unable to switch off, or coping well on the outside while feeling overwhelmed within.

Words that may feel familiar

Worried. Overwhelmed. Panic. Restless. Sleepless. Overthinking. Catastrophizing. Perfectionist. Exhausted.

How psychodynamic psychotherapy works with anxiety

Psychodynamic psychotherapy looks beneath the symptoms. Anxiety often has a history. It may be linked to early experiences, to relationships in which you did not feel safe or to pressure to be responsible, perfect or in control.

In sessions Maxine listens for the patterns that keep anxiety going. She pays attention to when it arrives, what it protects you from and how it shows up in your work, your relationships and your body. Making sense of these links can loosen anxiety’s hold.

There is no need to prepare. The first session starts from whatever is on your mind.

You begin with an initial consultation to talk through what has brought you to this point. If you decide to continue, sessions last 50 minutes and are usually weekly or twice weekly.

Questions about anxiety therapy

Can psychotherapy help with panic attacks?

Panic can feel sudden, physical and frightening. Psychodynamic psychotherapy does not focus only on stopping an attack. It explores what may sit behind it, such as pressures, losses or feelings that have been hard to express. If panic is new or severe, speak to your GP as well.

Is this different from stress or burnout support?

Stress and burnout often come with anxiety. Maxine works with all three. Therapy gives you a regular, confidential space to look at what is driving the pressure. That might be work, family or the expectations you place on yourself.

How long does therapy for anxiety take?

It varies from person to person. An initial six-week trial period may be suitable. After that, therapy can last for twenty sessions or be open-ended. There is no obligation to continue.

Can I have therapy for anxiety online?

Yes. Sessions are available on Harley Street, in North London and online. You can choose what suits your life and talk it through at your initial consultation.
