Trauma therapy in London
Relational trauma, early developmental, complex, PTSD
Maxine E King offers psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults affected by trauma, including relational trauma, early developmental trauma, complex trauma and PTSD. Therapy offers a steady, confidential relationship in which difficult experiences can be understood at a pace you can manage.
What trauma can feel like
Trauma is not only about single events. Relational and early developmental trauma come from experiences in relationships, often in childhood, where you were not safe, seen or protected. Complex trauma can follow repeated or prolonged harm.
PTSD can involve intrusive memories, feeling constantly on edge, avoidance and disturbed sleep. Trauma can also show up in the body, in emotions that feel too big or in numbness.
Words that may feel familiar
Trauma. Unsafe. Fear. Shutdown. Numb. Hiding. Betrayed. Unravelling. Explosive. Blackhole.
How psychodynamic psychotherapy works with trauma
Psychodynamic psychotherapy works with trauma through the relationship itself. It explores how early experiences shaped the way you relate to other people and to yourself. Alongside her general clinical practice Maxine specialises in relational trauma.
You do not have to tell your story in detail before you are ready. The pace is set with you. The aim is understanding rather than reliving.

Questions about trauma therapy
Will I have to talk about what happened?
Not before you are ready. In the first session you can start from what is on your mind. The pace is agreed with you.
What is relational or complex trauma?
Relational trauma comes from harm or neglect within important relationships. Complex trauma follows repeated or prolonged experiences, often over years. Both can affect trust, emotions, the body and your sense of self.
Is psychodynamic psychotherapy suitable for PTSD?
Guidance for PTSD often recommends specific trauma-focused therapies. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a different approach. It focuses on how trauma has affected your relationships and sense of self. If you are unsure which approach suits you, your GP can advise. Maxine can also talk it through at an initial consultation.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Trauma work can need time. An initial six-week trial period may be suitable. Therapy can then last for twenty sessions or be open-ended, with no obligation to continue.
