Therapy for emotional dysregulation and disconnection

Emotional – including dysregulation, disconnection

Maxine E King offers psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults whose emotions feel overwhelming, unpredictable or out of reach. Therapy helps you understand where strong or missing feelings come from and how they shape your life.

What emotional dysregulation and disconnection can feel like

Emotional dysregulation can mean feelings that arrive fast and strong. Rage, panic or sudden mood-swings can take a long time to settle. You may react in ways that surprise you and regret them afterwards.

Disconnection can feel like the opposite. You may feel numb, shut down or cut off from yourself and from other people. Many people move between the two.

How psychodynamic psychotherapy works with emotions

Psychodynamic psychotherapy treats both intense feelings and absent feelings as meaningful. They often carry a history. Maxine helps you notice what sets feelings off, what they connect to from the past and how they play out in your relationships, including in the therapy itself.

As feelings become better understood they can feel less frightening. You may find you have more choice in how you respond. Alongside her psychodynamic training, Maxine is trained in Schema Therapy and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy.

Questions about emotional dysregulation and disconnection

What is emotional dysregulation?

It describes difficulty managing the strength or length of emotions. It is a description of experience rather than a diagnosis on its own. It can occur alongside anxiety, trauma, ADHD and other difficulties.

Do I need a diagnosis to have therapy?

A diagnosis comes from your GP or a psychiatrist. You can talk through what you are experiencing at an initial consultation.

Can therapy help if I feel nothing at all?

Yes. Feeling nothing is a way of coping. It is explored with the same care as strong feelings. Therapy offers a steady relationship in which feelings can return at a pace you can manage.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions are available on Harley Street, in North London and online.
