Therapy for identity, sense of self, gender and sexuality
Identity – including sense of self, gender, sexuality
Maxine E King offers confidential psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults exploring identity, including their sense of self, gender or sexuality. Sessions are a private space to think things through at your own pace.
What questions of identity can feel like
Questions of identity can be quiet or urgent. You may feel you do not know who you are, that you have been playing a role for other people or that your sense of self changes from one setting to another.
Questions about gender or sexuality can bring excitement, fear, shame or relief. Sometimes they bring all four at once. They can be shaped by family, culture, faith and work.
Words that may feel familiar
Unrecognisable. Hiding. Pleasing others. Judged. Misunderstood. Unspoken. Taboo. Lost.
How psychodynamic psychotherapy works with identity
Psychodynamic psychotherapy pays attention to how identity forms in relationships from early life onwards. It also looks at what was allowed to be felt and said. It notices what was not. Maxine helps you explore these threads without pressure to reach a particular answer.
Maxine is further qualified in Relationship Psychotherapy and Clinical Sexology. She works with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Questions about identity
Do I need to know what I want before I start?
No. Many people arrive with questions rather than answers. The first step is an initial consultation to talk through what has brought you to this point.
Is therapy a place to explore gender and sexuality?
Yes. Identity includes gender and sexuality. Both are part of Maxine’s work. You can bring questions, doubts or experiences you have not been able to say aloud.
Will what I say be kept confidential?
All contact and correspondence is confidential. Maxine adheres to professional ethics and standards.
What if I am not ready to talk about it yet?
You can go at your own pace. In the first session you can start from whatever is on your mind.
