Therapy for life transitions and questions of meaning

Existential – including life transition, development, meaning

Maxine E King offers psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults facing life transitions, questions of development or a loss of meaning. Therapy gives you space to think about who you are becoming and what matters to you.

What existential difficulties can feel like

Questions of meaning often arrive at turning points. A change of career, the end of a relationship, becoming a parent, illness, ageing or a milestone birthday can all raise them. You may ask what it is all for, or feel that your life has stalled.

Success does not always feel the way you expected. You may feel that you have outgrown an old version of yourself without knowing what comes next.

Words that may feel familiar

Lost. Stuck. Unknown. Uncertain. Confused. Empty. Unimportant. Disconcerted.

How psychodynamic psychotherapy works with meaning and change

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is well suited to questions that have no quick answer. It explores the past and the present. It also explores the meaning your experiences hold for you. Maxine helps you look at what has shaped your choices, what you have put aside and what you want to carry forward.

Life transitions also stir up earlier changes and losses. Making sense of these links can help a new stage feel less frightening.

Sessions with Maxine

You begin with an initial consultation to talk through what has brought you to this point. If you decide to continue, sessions last 50 minutes and are usually weekly or twice weekly.

Fees are discussed in advance of the initial consultation. Health Insurance: Bupa provider.

Questions about life transitions and meaning

Is this the same as existential therapy?

Existential therapy is a separate approach. Maxine is a psychodynamic psychotherapist. Questions of meaning, development and life transition are explored within psychodynamic psychotherapy, which looks at how your past and present shape the way you experience your life.

Do I need to be in crisis to start therapy?

No. Many people come at a time of transition rather than crisis. You may simply feel that something must change and want to understand why.

Can therapy help with a change such as a career move or becoming a parent?

Therapy can give you a place to think through the change and the feelings it raises. It does not tell you what to decide. It helps you understand what is driving your choices.

How long does therapy take?

An initial six-week trial period may be suitable. Otherwise, therapy can last for twenty sessions or be open-ended. There is no obligation to continue.
