Grief and loss therapy in London

Loss & Grief – including endings, bereavement

Maxine E King offers psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults experiencing grief and loss, including bereavement and other endings. Therapy gives you space to feel and make sense of what has been lost at your own pace.

What grief and loss can feel like

Grief can follow a death. It can also follow the end of a relationship, a job, a role, your health, a pregnancy or a future you had hoped for. It rarely moves in a straight line.

Grief can bring sadness, anger, guilt, relief or nothing at all. Feelings can arrive without warning or seem too big to say aloud.

Words that may feel familiar

Grief. Loss. Regret. Guilt. Numb. Broken. Sad. Unspoken. Unthinkable.

How psychodynamic psychotherapy works with grief

Psychodynamic psychotherapy has a long tradition of thinking about loss. It explores the relationship you had with the person or thing that has gone. It also looks at how a new loss connects to earlier ones and to feelings that can be hard to bear, such as anger or guilt.

Endings of many kinds can be brought to therapy, including losses that other people may not recognise as grief. Maxine is also trained in Infant Loss.

Questions about grief and loss

How long does grief last?

There is no set timetable. Grief changes shape over time and can return at anniversaries or after new losses. Therapy offers a regular, dependable space to make sense of it.

Is it normal to feel angry or guilty after a loss?

Yes. Anger, guilt, relief and numbness are all common responses. Therapy is a place where these feelings can be spoken about without judgement.

Can I come for a loss that is not a bereavement?

Yes. Maxine’s work includes endings such as the end of a relationship, a career or a hoped-for future, as well as bereavement.

Is it too soon to start therapy after a loss?

There is no right time. Some people come soon after a loss. Others wait. An initial consultation is a chance to talk it through and decide together whether therapy feels right.
