Women’s therapy in London
Women’s therapy
Maxine E King offers psychodynamic psychotherapy for women, including women addressing relational trauma and women navigating the impact of childbirth and motherhood.
For women seeking to address relational trauma, and for women navigating the impact of childbirth and motherhood. This includes the often unspoken pressures of caring for others while managing one’s own emotional life, relationships, and the shifts in identity and intimacy that can accompany becoming a mother.
What women may bring to therapy
Motherhood can bring joy alongside exhaustion, ambivalence, guilt, grief or anger that is hard to admit. Women are often expected to hold everyone else together while their own feelings go unheard.
A frightening birth, a miscarriage, the loss of a baby or a shift in a relationship can leave feelings that go unspoken. Relational trauma can also shape how a woman experiences herself and her family.
Words that may feel familiar
Overwhelmed. Exhausted. Guilt. Pleasing others. Unspoken. Unimportant. Responsibility. Expectations. Taboo. Perfectionist.
How psychodynamic psychotherapy works with women
Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers a space that belongs only to you, separate from the demands of partner, baby or family. It explores how becoming a mother can stir your own experiences of being mothered. It also makes room for the changes in identity and intimacy that motherhood can bring.
Maxine specialises in therapy for women navigating difficult lives or the impact of motherhood. She is also trained in Infant Loss.

Questions about women’s therapy
Is women’s therapy only for mothers?
No. It also supports women who want to address relational trauma and women navigating difficult lives. Motherhood is one part of Maxine’s work with women.
I think I may have postnatal depression. What should I do?
Speak to your GP or health visitor. They can assess you and talk through your options. Therapy can offer a space to make sense of what you are feeling alongside that support.
Can I have online sessions around childcare?
Sessions are available online as well as on Harley Street and in North London. Online sessions can make it easier to fit therapy around family life.
What if I feel guilty for struggling?
Guilt is very common, especially in the early years of motherhood. Therapy is a place to say what feels unsayable elsewhere and to understand where the guilt comes from.
