Therapy for neurodivergent adults with ADHD or ASD

Neurodiversity – ADHD/ASD

Maxine E King offers psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults with ADHD or ASD. Therapy focuses on the emotional and relational side of life, including identity, stress, shame and the effort of navigating a world that can feel like a poor fit.

What neurodivergent adults may bring to therapy

Many neurodivergent adults describe years of feeling different, misunderstood or too much. A late diagnosis can bring relief alongside grief for the support that was missed.

Masking, sensory overload, burnout, sensitivity to criticism and difficulty with change can all affect mood and relationships. Ordinary demands can leave you exhausted.

Words that may feel familiar

Misunderstood. Overwhelmed. Distracted. Scattered. Exhausted. Defective. Shutdown. Hiding.

How psychodynamic psychotherapy works with neurodiversity

Psychodynamic psychotherapy explores the emotional meaning of these experiences. It looks at how you learned to see yourself, where shame began and how your relationships have been affected. Maxine works with individuals from diverse backgrounds. She listens for what is particular to you.

This page is about therapy rather than diagnosis. A diagnosis of ADHD or ASD comes from a specialist assessment. Therapy is different from coaching or medication. It can sit alongside either.

You begin with an initial consultation to talk through what has brought you to this point. If you decide to continue, sessions last 50 minutes and are usually weekly or twice weekly.

Questions about neurodiversity therapy

Do I need a diagnosis to have therapy?

A diagnosis is not something therapy provides. You can talk through your situation at an initial consultation, whether you are diagnosed, waiting for an assessment or simply wondering.

Can therapy help after a late diagnosis?

A late diagnosis can change how you understand your whole life story. Therapy gives you space to explore what that means for your identity, your relationships and the years before diagnosis.

How is this different from ADHD coaching?

Coaching usually focuses on practical strategies. Psychodynamic psychotherapy focuses on emotional meaning, relationships and the patterns that repeat in your life.

Are sessions available online?

Yes. Sessions are available online as well as on Harley Street and in North London.
